Spray Foam Insulation Sealant

Spray Foam Sealant

Spray Foam Insulation & Sealant

Spray foam is an expanding polyurethane (PU) foam used to fill gaps, seal openings and provide thermal and sound insulation. It is commonly used around doors and windows, pipes and cables, wall joints, roof gaps and other construction openings.

Unlike conventional cement or putty, expanding PU foam can fill irregular and difficult-to-reach spaces. After application, the foam expands and cures to form a lightweight sealing and insulating layer.

Supex PU foam is available in straw-grade and gun-grade formats, including fire-retardant options for applications where fire performance is required.

What Can Spray Foam Be Used For?

Supex PU Foam is commonly used for:

  • Filling gaps around door and window frames

  • Sealing AC pipe and cable openings

  • Filling wall, ceiling and construction gaps

  • Sealing pipe and cable penetrations

  • Roof and metal-sheet gap sealing

  • Thermal and sound insulation

  • Filling voids around building components

If you need to fill a large or irregular gap, expanding PU foam can be a practical alternative to traditional cement, putty or other rigid fillers.

Things to Know Before Using PU Foam Sealant

  • PU foam spray expands after application.
  • Surfaces should be clean.
  • Moisture helps curing.
  • Excess cured foam can be cut.
  • Cured PU foam should generally be protected from prolonged UV exposure.
  • The correct application method depends on straw vs gun-grade foam.
  • Fire-retardant foam should be selected where the application requires it.

How to use Expanding foam spray sealant

  1. Clean the application area with water spray.
  2. Moisten the area with Water spray. PU spray foam insulation sealant adheres to almost all surfaces that are strong, clean and free of dust and grease. Only silicon, oils, greases, polyethylene, teflon or similar surfaces are not suitable to be applied on.
  3. Surface must be dampened enough to ensure that the foam sealant finds adequate moisture for its hardening process. Otherwise, it could impair the adhesion and edge adhesion.
  4. Attach the Straw on the can.
  5. Shake the can vigorously  for 20 to 25 times.
  6. Hold the can upside down such that the valve faces downwards. This is the only way to completely empty the can.
  7. Press the trigger, foam will rush out of the can under pressure.
  8. Keep shaking the can.
  9. Plan the work such that entire can material is consumed in one go,  i.e., after opening the can, it should be completely consumed. This is recommended because whatever is left will get cured inside the can and thus go to waste.
  10. The foam cures in 30 – 40 minutes depending upon weather conditions.
  11. After curing , extra foam can be cut with a sharp knife.
  12. Foam sealant is paintable. It is not UV resistant – should not be exposed to direct sunlight. If unavoidable – paint the foam to protect from sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is spray foam used for?
Supex PU Foam is used to fill gaps, seal openings, and provide thermal and sound insulation in buildings and construction applications.

Does pu foam fill gaps?
Yes. Expanding spray foam fills gaps, cracks, voids, and hard-to-reach spaces around doors, windows, pipes, cables, and walls.

How much does pu foam sealant expand?
Supex PU Foam expands after application. The expansion rate varies by product, so always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

How long does PU foam sealant take to cure?
Most PU foams begin curing within a few hours, but complete curing time depends on the product, temperature, humidity, and application thickness.

Can spray foam be used around windows and doors?
Yes. Spray foam can be used to fill and seal gaps around window and door frames, helping improve insulation and reduce air leakage.

Is PU foam sealant waterproof?
Cured PU foam provides good resistance to moisture, but it should be properly protected from prolonged water exposure and UV radiation.

Can cured spray foam be painted?
Yes. Once fully cured and trimmed, spray foam can generally be painted or covered with a suitable protective material.

What is the difference between straw-grade and gun-grade spray foam?
Straw-grade foam is applied using an attached nozzle, while gun-grade foam is applied using a PU foam gun for greater control and precision.

Is spray foam suitable for insulation?
Yes. Expanding PU spray foam can help provide thermal and sound insulation while also filling gaps and voids.

What is the difference between spray foam insulation and PU foam sealant?
Spray foam insulation primarily focuses on reducing heat and sound transfer, while PU foam sealant is mainly used to fill gaps, seal openings, and prevent air leakage.

  1. 1. I have sump (tank) on my portico where water from Government supply and borewell falls and getting stored. From this tank a small motor is used to lift water to overhead tank.
    2. Since portico is used to park car the lid of the cement tank, is made up of strong heavy gauge metal sheet well painted). However the lid need not be opened regularly, but only once or twice in year to clean the sump.
    a. I have made small opening cut on the lid to check the level of water which can be closed with small lid. An idea well appreciated by others.
    3. THE ISSUE: It is found that lot of ants, cockroaches and other insects are going inside the sump thru gaps of the lid which is fixed (welded) to a metal frame.
    4. Now the question : Which sealant / caulk / Putty or ( whatever easily understandable names or generic name one can call it ) , that can be used to fill the problem gaps to avoid the unwanted penetrations stated above
    a. Once filled, it need to be removed only once or twice in a year, for cleaning the sump.
    b. Hence The ‘ filler “ should be somewhat strong , somewhat non toxic , that can be removed and re-filled afresh after clearing the tank
    5. Any Advisers? If come out with some correct answers or affordable product, which can be easily apply (DIY) then I am sure there are lots of needy persons to buy it. Waiting answer ASAP.
