Why Choose Supex 577 Thread Sealant?

A reliable threaded connection needs more than mechanical tightening. The sealing method must also suit the thread type, fluid, pressure and operating conditions.

Supex 577 offers the following benefits for suitable metal-threaded connections.

Reliable Thread Sealing

The liquid sealant fills suitable gaps between engaged metal threads. This helps reduce leakage through the threaded connection.

Medium-Strength Performance

Supex 577 is described as a medium-strength thread sealant. It is designed to provide sealing while allowing later disassembly with suitable tools.

Resistance to Vibration

The cured sealant helps resist loosening caused by vibration. This can be useful in suitable industrial and mechanical assemblies.

Clean Application

The liquid formulation can be applied directly to the threads. It avoids the loose strips associated with PTFE tape when the product is correctly applied.

Broad Metal Compatibility

The product is intended for suitable metal-threaded connections. Always check the technical data sheet for compatibility with the exact metals and operating conditions.

Support for Industrial Maintenance

Thread sealant can help reduce leakage-related maintenance when the correct product is selected and applied according to instructions.

Applications of Supex 577 Anaerobic Thread Sealant

Supex 577 is designed for suitable metal-threaded connections across several applications.

1. Industrial Pipe Fittings

Threaded connections are widely used in industrial piping systems.

Supex 577 can help seal compatible metal pipe threads where its pressure, temperature and chemical-resistance limits meet the application requirements.

2. Plumbing and Water Lines

Metal pipe fittings in plumbing systems may require a thread sealant to prevent leakage.

Choose a product approved for the specific service. For drinking-water systems, confirm the required potable-water certification before use.

3. Hydraulic Systems

Hydraulic equipment relies on secure connections to maintain system performance.

Supex 577 may be suitable for compatible threaded connections, subject to the fitting design, fluid, pressure and manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not assume it is suitable for every hydraulic fitting or high-pressure connection.

4. Pneumatic Systems

Pneumatic equipment uses threaded connections to carry compressed air.

A suitable thread sealant can help prevent leakage through compatible metal threads. Confirm that the product is approved for the system’s pressure and service conditions.

5. Industrial Machinery

Machinery often contains threaded pipe fittings and fluid connections exposed to vibration.

Supex 577 can help seal suitable connections and resist vibration-related loosening.

6. Automotive and Mechanical Assemblies

Certain mechanical assemblies use threaded metal fittings for fluids or other services.

Check the product documentation before use. Compatibility depends on the materials, fluid, temperature and connection design.

7. Stainless Steel and Other Metal Threads

Some metal combinations are harder to seal or may cure more slowly with anaerobic products.

Check the manufacturer’s guidance for stainless steel, brass, aluminium and other specific metals. An approved activator may be needed in certain applications.

Discuss Your Application

How Does Anaerobic Thread Sealant Work?

Anaerobic thread sealant is a liquid material that cures when air is excluded from the joint and suitable metal surfaces are in contact.

Here is how it works:

  1. Application: Apply the sealant to the specified threaded area.
  2. Assembly: Join the threaded components and tighten them according to the fitting manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Curing: The sealant begins to cure within the assembled joint.
  4. Sealing: The cured material fills suitable gaps between the threads and helps prevent leakage.

The time needed to reach handling strength and full cure depends on the product, metal surfaces, temperature and gap size.

Do not assume that a connection is ready for full operating pressure just because it has been assembled. Follow the technical data sheet for curing and pressurisation requirements.

How to Apply Supex 577 Thread Sealant

Correct application helps improve sealing performance and reduce the risk of leaks.

Step 1: Clean the Threads

Remove oil, grease, dirt and other contaminants from the threaded surfaces.

Use a suitable cleaner, such as Supex SF 7063 where compatible, or another approved degreaser. Allow the surfaces to dry as directed.

Step 2: Inspect the Connection

Check the threads for damage, wear or contamination.

Confirm that the thread type and fitting design are suitable for the application. Thread sealant cannot compensate for damaged or incompatible connections.

Step 3: Apply the Sealant

Apply a continuous bead of Supex 577 to the specified thread engagement area.

Follow the product instructions for the amount and position of application. Avoid excessive application that could introduce sealant into sensitive system components.

Step 4: Assemble the Fitting

Join the components and tighten them according to the fitting manufacturer’s recommended procedure.

Do not use sealant as a substitute for the correct tightening method or torque.

Step 5: Allow the Sealant to Cure

Allow sufficient time for curing before exposing the connection to service pressure.

The product page lists a full cure time of approximately 24 hours. Actual curing can vary with the metal, temperature and application conditions.

Step 6: Check the Completed Joint

Follow the system manufacturer’s procedure for leak testing and commissioning.

Use the appropriate test method for the service. Never check for gas leaks with an open flame.

Important: Follow the latest Supex technical data sheet and safety data sheet for application, curing, handling and pressurisation instructions.

Which Thread Sealant Should You Choose?

Choose an anaerobic thread sealant when:

  • The connection uses compatible metal threads.
  • You want a liquid sealant that cures inside the assembled joint.
  • Vibration resistance is important.
  • The product’s pressure, temperature and chemical limits suit the application.

Consider PTFE tape when:

  • The tape is approved for the thread and service.
  • The connection design and installation procedure support tape use.
  • Easy disassembly is a priority.

Consider a pipe jointing compound when:

  • Its technical documentation confirms compatibility with the fluid and fitting.
  • The system specification calls for that sealing method.

No single method is best for every connection. Always follow the fitting manufacturer’s instructions and applicable industry standards.
