What is RTV Silicone?
RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) silicone sealants are viscous liquids or pastes that cure into flexible, rubber-like solids when exposed to air moisture. They react with atmospheric humidity, releasing a by-product, and form durable bonds without heat.
Key Advantages of Silicone Sealants:
- Extreme Temperature Resistance: Withstand high/low temperatures better than organic rubbers like polyurethane or EPDM—ideal for thermal expansion, wind, or seismic movement.
- Superior Insulation: Provide excellent thermal and electrical insulation for energy-efficient sealing.
- Long-Lasting Durability: UV-resistant, weatherproof, and form tight, leak-proof seals that last up to 4x longer.
- Aesthetic & Versatile: Available in many colors; bond glass, metal, ceramics, plastics, concrete.
- Waterproof & Mildew-Resistant: Repel moisture—perfect for bathrooms, windows, aquariums, glazing.
- Low Reactivity: No VOCs, low odor, chemically stable.

Antifungal/mild dew silicone sealants
These are specially formulated to inhibit the growth and spread of mildew – a type of mold characterized by a dark colour & offensive musty odour. Mildew can pose a host of health concerns, and so inhibiting its growth is important.
- Tub, tile, sinks, and counters
- Shower stalls
- Floor drains
General silicone sealant uses:
- HVAC/R applications such as penetrations through the exterior of a construct
- Electrical applications such as service entrances
- Roofing applications
- Plumbing applications
- RV, trailer, and speciality vehicle manufacture and repair
Flange sealing/ Gasketing:
Replace solid gasket in Engine, transmission, heavy-duty gear box, turbines, pumps, casings & etc with RTV Gasket sealant in India.
Types of Silicone Sealants
Silicones are classified with keeping in mind their curing systems
- Acetc acid cure,Acetoxy
- Neutral cure
- Alkaline cure
Acetoxy Silicone sealant
Most popular & thus used extensively due to lower costs. One of the top selling product amongst silicones. Features including Acetoxy cure , low cost , low elongation, Resistant to sunlight making it undoubtedly suitable for general gap filling applications.
Neutral Cure Silicone Sealant
Higher grade Silicone sealants particularly used for technical as well as critical applications.
Classification of Neutral cure silicones
- Construction – Structural, Weather, Sanitary/kitchen, Neutral+ general purpose
- Industrial- Gasketing/Flange sealing, Food grade approved, High temperature
- Electronics – Potting, Encapsulation, Electrically and Thermally conductive types
Why is GP Silicone so popular in India?
GP, General Purpose Silicone sealant is a very popular silicone used in India for sundry applications. Though it may not be the right/best sealant yet its popularity leads to the question why.
- low price – DIY Silicone is sold from local Hardware shops. The ‘low cost types’ are sold in 240, 260 gms cartridge, actual sealant is approx 170-180 ml per cartridge. The end customer is happy to get one tube( size of cartridge looks the same as 280 ml ) at low price and the manufacturer/importer is happy since the price/ ml is still not less. Also sometimes the ‘B’ , ‘C’ grade silicones are imported at very less cost too.
- availability: it is widely and easily available unlike other sealants which is sold through institutional channels and a DIY customer doesn’t have access to it.
- Awareness: local plumbers/waterproofing agencies/ electrician/ end customer are satisfied having used a sealant instead of putty or traditional sealing material. As the market matures the consumer would ask for suitability and quantity of sealant. Manufacturers would educate and differentiate their products from the commodity.
Disadvantages of using GP Silicone sealant
- bonding with porous substrates is poor ,eg: concrete
- bonding with uPVC is poor
- strong odour
- releases acetic acid as by-product during curing, this acid is corrosive and corrodes metal surface. Automotive OEM generally dont use acetoxy silicones in the engine/transmission/ under the hood.
- it is not sensor safe
- durability and sustainability is lesser than neutral grade silicones
- shrinkage due to high solvent content
How to Use Silicone Sealants Properly
Follow these simple steps for a professional, long-lasting seal with RTV silicone sealants:
- Prepare the Surface: Clean thoroughly—remove old sealant, dirt, grease, and debris for strong adhesion.
- Mask Edges: Apply masking tape along joint edges for clean lines and neat finish.
- Load Cartridge: Cut nozzle tip to desired bead size, screw on, and insert into caulking gun.
- Apply Sealant: Hold gun at 45° angle. Squeeze steadily, pushing sealant ahead of nozzle for smooth bead.
- Tool Immediately: Within 5 minutes, smooth with finger or damp tool. Wipe excess with dry cloth.
- Curing Time: Skins in 5 mins, touch-dry in 1 hour, full cure in 24 hours (7 days for max strength).
- Store Leftover: Seal nozzle with tape to prevent drying.
- Clean Up: Wipe hands dry first, then wash with soap.
Pro Tip: Use battery or pneumatic guns for faster, less wasteful application on big jobs.

FAQs: RTV Silicone Sealants
Is RTV silicone sealant paintable? No—standard silicone isn’t paintable. For paintable options, choose Supex 500 acrylic sealant or Supex Bond All MS sealant.
What colours are available? Clear, white, black, and grey are standard (popular as clear RTV or white silicone sealant). Special shades like brown (RAL 8017/8007), grey (RAL 7047), ivory, and brilliant white available. Custom colours for bulk orders.
Do I need different silicones for different jobs? Yes—formulations vary in adhesion, flexibility, and durability. Select the right product for your application. Contact Supex for expert advice.
Do I need to prepare surfaces? Yes—clean within 24 hours for strong bonds. Use solvent (e.g., mineral spirits) on metals/glass/plastics; sand porous surfaces. Avoid galvanized metal, constant water submersion, or soap residue.
Can I apply new silicone over old? Better to remove old silicone first. New can bond to old, but adhesion is weaker.
What is “tooling” and “tooling time”? Tooling means smoothing the bead. Tooling time is the window (usually 5 minutes) before skin forms.
What does “skinning over” mean? When a firm skin forms on the surface as curing starts.
How to store silicone sealant? Push sealant to tip, replace nozzle, store cool and dry.
Does silicone go bad? Supex guarantees 1-year shelf life. Test with a small bead—if no skin in 15–20 mins, it’s expired.
How long to cure? Full cure in 24 hours (depends on humidity).
How much coverage per tube? 260–600ml cartridges. Use our sealant calculator for exact yield based on joint size.
