Spray Foam Sealant
Expanding Foam spray Sealant is generally made available in two forms –
- Spray Can – Dipensed using an adopter or straw or Pipe : one straw is preattached to the can .
- Gun grade – Dispensed using a Hand held PU Gun
Furthar it is classified into B3 ( Non FR ) type and B1( FR ) type PU foam spray.
How to use Expanding foam spray sealant
- Clean the application area with water spray.
- Moisten the area with Water spray. PU foam adheres to almost all surfaces that are strong, clean and free of dust and grease. Only silicon, oils, greases, polyethylene, teflon or similar surfaces are not suitable to be applied on.
- Surface must be dampened enough to ensure that the foam sealant finds adequate moisture for its hardening process. Otherwise, it could impair the adhesion and edge adhesion.
- Attach the Straw on the can.
- Shake the can vigorously for 20 to 25 times.
- Hold the can upside down such that the valve faces downwards. This is the only way to completely empty the can.
- Press the trigger, foam will rush out of the can under pressure.
- Keep shaking the can.
- Plan the work such that entire can material is consumed in one go, i.e., after opening the can, it should be completely consumed. This is recommended because whatever is left will get cured inside the can and thus go to waste.
- The foam cures in 30 – 40 minutes depending upon weather conditions.
- After curing , extra foam can be cut with a sharp knife.
- Foam sealant is paintable. It is not UV resistant – should not be exposed to direct sunlight. If unavoidable – paint the foam to protect from sunlight.

Can expanding foam spray stop leaks?
Even if water is sprayed directly onto it, it won’t allow it to travel through, acting instead as a barrier between it and the property within. This thermal resistance keeps cold air and water out: leaving the property within a comfortable temperature and, most importantly, completely dry.
Is expanding foam sealant permanent?
Don’t use expanding foam as a permanent solution to leaks. The expanding foam will fill the gap however should you not fix the initial water damage, the leak could move into other parts of the basement. Furthermore, the expanding foam isn’t completely waterproof and therefore over time it could break down.
Does Polyurethane expanding Insulation foam spray sealant stick better to wet surfaces?
Be careful, though; you want to dampen the area, not wet it. Foam sealant won’t stick well to a wet surface. You can also mist the foam after it’s applied to maximize expansion and speed up the curing process.
Can you use expanding insulation foam sealant twice?
Expanding foam in a can is a great way to seal up cracks and gaps around your home. But if you don’t clean out the spray tube after using it, it can become clogged with foam, making it unable to use again. To unclog an expanding foam spray tube, squirt liquid spray lubricant in the tube to soften the hardened foam.
How thick can you apply spray foam?
The ASTM E84 tests for most spray polyurethane foams limit the maximum installed thickness of foams to 4 inches or less. The ASTM E84 tests for some SPF products limit installations to a maximum of only 2 inches.
When NOT to Use Spray Foam Insulation
- For areas that are too close to electrical boxes:
- For areas too close to ceiling light boxes:
- Open-cell spray foam on your roof:
- For closed-cavity spaces:
- If you have a history of skin, respiratory, or asthma problems

1. I have sump (tank) on my portico where water from Government supply and borewell falls and getting stored. From this tank a small motor is used to lift water to overhead tank.
2. Since portico is used to park car the lid of the cement tank, is made up of strong heavy gauge metal sheet well painted). However the lid need not be opened regularly, but only once or twice in year to clean the sump.
a. I have made small opening cut on the lid to check the level of water which can be closed with small lid. An idea well appreciated by others.
3. THE ISSUE: It is found that lot of ants, cockroaches and other insects are going inside the sump thru gaps of the lid which is fixed (welded) to a metal frame.
4. Now the question : Which sealant / caulk / Putty or ( whatever easily understandable names or generic name one can call it ) , that can be used to fill the problem gaps to avoid the unwanted penetrations stated above
a. Once filled, it need to be removed only once or twice in a year, for cleaning the sump.
b. Hence The ‘ filler “ should be somewhat strong , somewhat non toxic , that can be removed and re-filled afresh after clearing the tank
5. Any Advisers? If come out with some correct answers or affordable product, which can be easily apply (DIY) then I am sure there are lots of needy persons to buy it. Waiting answer ASAP.
